BMI chart

Body mass index for every adult height and weight, in pounds and kilograms, with the healthy range for each height.

The BMI chart shows the body mass index for every adult height and weight. A BMI under 18.5 is underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 is a healthy weight, 25 to 29.9 is overweight and 30 or more is obesity. At 5 ft 9 in, for example, a healthy weight is 125–168 lb; at 170 cm it is 53.4–72.1 kg. The same chart applies to men and women aged 20 and over.

Or skip the chart: the BMI calculator gives your exact BMI, its category and your healthy range in one step.

Healthy weight range by height

Weights for each category, from 4 ft 10 in to 6 ft 6 in. These follow the CDC's method: a weight counts in a category if its BMI, rounded to one decimal, does — which is why the CDC's own example gives 125 to 168 lb as healthy at 5 ft 9 in.

How to read the chart

  1. Find your height in the left-hand column.
  2. Move along the row to the weight nearest yours.
  3. The number at the top of that column is your BMI; the colour is its category.

The chart rounds to whole pounds and kilograms, so for a weight between two columns your BMI is between the two. The formula behind every cell is BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)², or 703 × weight (lb) ÷ height (in)² — see how BMI is calculated.

Who the chart is for

  • Adults aged 20 and over, men and women alike.
  • Not children and teens. From 2 to 19, BMI is compared with children of the same age and sex as a percentile. Use the BMI calculator for kids and teens.
  • Asian, and in the UK also Middle Eastern, Black African and African-Caribbean adults: many guidelines read overweight from the 23 column and obesity from 27.5. See the Asian BMI calculator.
  • Over 65: a BMI a little above 25 is not linked with higher risk, and below 23 risk rises. See the BMI calculator for seniors.
  • Not during pregnancy. Use your weight before pregnancy with the pregnancy weight gain calculator.

BMI cannot tell muscle from fat or see where fat sits, so pair it with your waist: keep it under half your height (waist-to-height ratio).

Questions

What is a normal BMI on the chart?

For adults, 18.5 to 24.9 — the green band. At 5 ft 9 in that is 125–168 lb; at 170 cm, 53.4–72.1 kg.

How do I read a BMI chart?

Find your height in the first column, then move across the row to the weight closest to yours. The number at the top of that column is your BMI, and the colour shows its category.

Is the BMI chart the same for men and women?

Yes. Adult BMI and its categories are the same for men and women from age 20. The chart does not apply to children and teens, whose BMI is read as a percentile for age and sex.

Is there a BMI chart for Asians?

Many guidelines use lower cut-offs for people of Asian background: overweight from 23 and obesity from 27.5. Read the same chart with those columns as the lines, or use the Asian BMI calculator.

What is a healthy weight for a 5 ft 4 in woman?

Any weight from 108–145 lb, a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9.
